How to get an appointment
- Decide on the department, not just the hospital. In China you book a specific department and often a specific doctor, not a general appointment.
- Check whether the hospital has an international desk. The largest university hospitals often publish an English contact channel for foreign patients; ask us to help you reach the right one.
- Bring your records. Original imaging, discs or digital files, medication lists, blood test results and a translation summary are essential for the first consultation.
- Plan two separate visits. Scans and blood work are usually done on one day, with results reviewed one or more days later. Budget enough days before flying home.
- Confirm the queue reality before booking flights. At the most famous departments, waiting times can run from days to weeks for surgery.
Light activities while you recover
Most visitors feel well enough for short, flat walks between appointments. These are low-effort options suitable for recovery days:
- Bund waterfront walk
- Yuyuan Garden and old town
- Riverside walk at Xuhui
- Shanghai Museum morning visit
